First Preparation Steps of a SAP Unicode Conversion
There are two types of code page in SAP system
- Single code page
- Multiple code page
All Code Page Configurations
Part : 1
Start to Prepare the Non-UC System for Unicode conversion
Execute Tcode : SPUMG provides a set of database scans as tabstrips. Before you run the first scan you might want to read SAP Note 1096903 which provides information about how to split very large tables before scanning them. Then you check the consistency of the non-Unicode database with the first scan in tcode SPUMG.
The Consistency Check
In Single Code Page systems this is the only available scan. In MDMP (Multi Display Multi Programming) systems there are a couple of other scans which are described in section Advanced Preparation Steps
Read the information on the entrance screen 'Welcome to SPUMG' and process the steps described there. Once you are finished with the first steps, the Tcode SPUMG main screen will be opened. Run the Consistency Check now until it is finished completely.
After the Consistency Check
The conversion preparation for Single Code Page system is nearly done whereas MDMP (Multi Display Multi Programming) systems need more scanning. Please follow the Documentation and Troubleshooting for details about the final preparation steps in Single Code Page systems.

Unicode Conversion Overview Guide
Steps You Can Start With Before the Conversion
Check software requirements and keep your system up-to-date
Download the applicable Unicode Conversion and System Copy Upgrade etc. Check required software versions (support packages, kernel patches) and apply the latest support package and kernel patch.
Textflag Handling
All LANG fields in Data Dictionary (DDIC) objects which are delivered by SAP have an attribute Text Lang. (indicator for a language field). This indicator specifies that the LANG field determines the code page of the character data in that table.
Reduce Data Volume
Data which has been archived or deleted means less preparation workload and shorter system downtime. In the Unicode Conversion Guide you will find automatic methods and manual steps and links to other documents.
Unicode Enabling of ABAP Programs
Make sure your own ABAP programs and SAP programs you modified are adapted to Unicode syntax and runtime restrictions.
